As soon as they reached their apartment, Jude got off the broom and cowered at the corner, not daring to face what Aaron would have in store for her. Aaron, on the other hand, put away his broom and bandaged his cut hands before bringing out his cauldron and potion ingredients and setting them all on the coffee table, with the cauldron right in the middle. Jude stayed where she was, warily watching his every move.
“Jude, come here,” Aaron said, gesturing her to come to him. When Jude shook her head in reply, he gave her the usual authoritative tone, “Now.”
“Alright, alright. No need to be so bossy,” Jude said as she moved towards him. The first thing he did was take her hand.
“Lemme see…” Aaron muttered for a moment, then took out a pin to prick her finger.
“Oow! What was that for?”
Aaron didn’t reply, but took a blood sample from Jude’s finger and started making a mixture in the cauldron. As Jude sucked her bleeding finger and watched Aaron did his thing, she recognized by the way he stirred and by the ingredients he put in that it was a parental scanning potion only 6th years are allowed to learn, designed to help someone discover who the parent of a certain person you wish to investigate his/her lineage is. She had always wanted to learn that ever since she started reading about it in the library, but because many of the ingredients needed are kept under lock and key in Prof. Snape’s potion storage room, coupled with the fact that they were only allocated certain potion ingredients during classes for certain year students, she never got the chance to do so.
“Got anything?” Jude asked, interested.
“Hang on,” Aaron replied as he chanted a bit while stirring the potion. He whispered “Reveal to us the father” before dropping the blood sample into the cauldron. Jude watched in wonder at the way he worked.
“So much easier than getting DNA match samples in the Muggle world.”
A puff of greenish-brown smoke appeared from the cauldron and surrounded the entire living room. A big cluster of smoke began to materialize and take shape of a person. Slowly bit by bit, the smoke began to reveal detailed parts of the face, head, and body until it revealed to be an image of a handsome young man in his 20’s with brownish-black hair, reddish eyes and pale skin, dressed in a very expensive-looking suit with a robe made out of dragon hide.
“Impossible,” Aaron gasped in horror.
“What?” Jude asked, not recognizing the person in the smoke, but at the same time enthralled at seeing her real father for the first time. “Who’s he?”
“It’s Tom Marvolo Riddle.”
“Tom who?”
“He’s Voldemort, before he turned evil.”
“Vol…Voldemort…?!” Jude exclaimed, shocked that her worst fears had come true. “Voldemort is…my father?! That’s impossible!!! There must be some kind of mistake!”
“It is. The parental scanning potion doesn’t lie,” Aaron said as he destroyed the cloud with a vengeance. “Murderer…”
Jude backed away, trembling in fear and disbelief. So her worries did not go unanswered; she really was the daughter—the spawn—of evil. She couldn’t stay another minute longer. If the power she displayed at Hogwarts was really the result of an evil inheritance, who knows what she could do to her best friend?
“I…I think I should…go home now…” she said as she made her way towards the verandah that connected her side of the apartment with his.
“I’m not mad at you, Judith,” Aaron assured her.
“But…I’m mad at myself. I…I can’t face you right now…” Jude said as she quickly turned towards the verandah to climb back to her home.
“At least use the…” Aaron’s persuasion to Jude to use the front door like a normal person stopped when he saw a few dark figures flying towards his verandah. It was when one of them zoomed at top speed towards Jude’s direction that he found out it was a Dementor.
“Wait!! Jude, wait!!”
Jude was too late to react, as she was caught unaware by the Dementor that charged towards her. Face to face with the most skeletal, ugliest and more foul-breath of all beings, Jude could feel the Dementor’s cold arms wrapped around her as it opened its mouth, revealing its grisly set of teeth, ready to give her the famous Kiss. She could feel everything she held dear to her memories slipping away and her body closing in to freezing death as she was held immobile by the dark, gloomy forces of the Dementor that knew nothing but terror, sorrow and darkness…
“Expecto Patronum!!!” Aaron cast as he warded off the Dementor, his Patronus charm revealing the shape of a huge white wolf. Swiftly, he grabbed Jude and got her inside, locking all the doors and windows of his home with the Colloportus charm.
“What…What was that?!” Jude came back to her senses and instinctively reached out to hug Aaron.
“It’s the Dementors, guards of the Azkaban Prison,” Aaron replied as he comforted the petrified Jude. “Probably sent by the Ministry.”
“Oh God…Aaron, please…Don’t let them get me…”
“I won’t, don’t worry. The doors and windows are locked, and I have the Patronus charm.”
“Locked doors are not going to keep them out for long. I know the Ministry has Aurors for the job.”
“I can handle them.”
Aaron looked out cautiously. He could see that the Dementors were not letting up in their pursuit. They were still out there, looming around the apartment and waiting for a chance for Aaron to slip up and let them in. Aaron knew better than to let his guard down. He closed all the drapes and tried to keep the lights to a minimum glow.
“I’m…I’m cold…” Jude whined, shivering as she breathed white mists from her mouth. Aaron used his wand to start a fire for her.
“There you go.”
“Do they always make places so cold when they’re around?” Jude asked, huddling close to the fire.
“Yes, they do,” Aaron replied as he scared another Dementor who got too close to the window. “You’re feeling it, aren’t you?”
“Just didn’t think Harry would be right. He told me about…”
Her words were cut short when she suddenly felt a surge of energy invading her mind. It was overpowering her with the force of a freight train that she could not withstand it. Her eyes glowed red as she let out a strangled scream and collapsed onto the floor in a seizure. Aaron noticed this and rushed to her, trying to hold her down and look for something for her to bite in case it was an epileptic seizure.
“Judith! Judith, hang on!”
All of a sudden, Judith’s lips creased into a menacing smile, baring her fangs as she spoke in a raspy snake-like voice, “She’s mine…My daughter…”
Aaron’s heart immediately burned with anger. He’d recognize that voice anywhere. He drew out his wand and pointed at Jude, who was now invaded by his most hated enemy.
“Voldemort! You murderer!! Get out of Judith!!”
“She’s mine!” ‘Jude’ stood up and growled, pushing Aaron off. “She’s my flesh and blood! She’ll be my heir to my reign and I will not let her submit to the likes of you!”
“I should’ve used the Killing Curse on you when I had the chance that one time!”
“Fool! That means you’re weak! You are just as weak as everyone else who dares to face me, even dear ol’ Harry James Potter!”
Aaron growled and pounced on ‘her’, grabbing ‘her’ by the neck and holding ‘her’ onto the floor. “I order you to leave her now!!!”
‘Jude’ laughed evilly as ‘she’ replied, “Have it your way, Mudblood. But mark my words, my Athena will be mine!”
With that, his presence was gone, leaving Jude coughing and gasping for air. Aaron quickly let go of her and carried her in his arms.
“Judith! You alright?”
Obviously, she was not, for she was starting to cough out blood. Being possessed seemed to have taken a toll on her body and she was already turning pale to begin with. Aaron quickly used a healing charm to restore her strength and stopped her blood-coughing.
“That should do it.”
“Oh God…” Jude wiped her blood-stained palms on a tissue Aaron gave her. “What happened…?”
“You were possessed by the Dark Lord. He spoke to me through you.”
Jude widened her eyes in disbelief. She wanted to panic, to scream out loud how dare Voldemort invade her body without permission, but because of the toll the possession took on her body and the sedative effects of the healing charm, her anger and panic were replaced with extreme fatigue.
“I…I don’t feel so good…”
Jude soon fainted in Aaron’s arms. He caught her just in time before she misses him and falls to the solid floor below. He carried her to the bed and pulled the covers over her to keep her warm. He summoned Lola the owl and quickly wrote down a message to Albus and sent her off. Lola dodged the Dementors as much as possible as she made her way towards Hogwarts carrying the letter entrusted to her by her master.
Soon, after flying long hours through bushes and trees and past many other obstacles, Lola finally reached Albus’ Office where Albus Dumbledore was sitting at his desk enjoying his mint tea and lemon drops. Fawkes the phoenix saw Lola coming in and chirped to alert his master.
“What is it, Fawkes?” Albus got distracted from his tea and saw Lola swooping down towards his table. “Why, aren’t you Mr. Turunen’s owl?”
Lola landed safely on his table and dropped the letter onto the desk in front of him. He took out a few slabs of rat meat stashed in his lowest drawer and fed it to Lola while he opened the letter to read:
Dumbledore,
I have made contact with Voldemort…through his daughter Judith Light. I sense that he is getting stronger. Send me a reply ASAP.
Aaron Turunen
“Oh my. Aren’t we in a predicament?”
Dumbledore quickly took a piece of parchment and scribbled a short reply note and sent Lola off before getting ready to make the necessary firecalls.
Meanwhile, Aaron continued to tend to Jude who was still asleep. She would mumble and cringe occasionally at the slightest touch he made, and would toss and turn her head from time to time, as if she was having a nightmare.
“Hang on,” Aaron whispered as he wiped off the cold sweat forming on her forehead. Lola soon came in with Albus’ reply and dropped on Aaron’s lap. He quickly opened it and read its content:
Dear Turunen,
I shall contact the Order and have a secret meeting tonight. Bring Ms. Light along to Grimmauld’s Place at 6pm sharp.
Signed: Albus Dumbledore
Aaron stole a look at the clock and saw that it was 10 minutes past 5. If he wanted to get there on time, he might as well get started. Suddenly he heard Harry’s voice calling from the fireplace.
“Aaron? Oy, Aaron! You there?”
“Harry?” Aaron was surprised to get a firecall from Harry. “What are you doing here? How did you manage to call me?”
“Hermione somehow managed to figure out how to hack into your fireplace to make this firecall. Go figures. She could be a great computer hacker if she were a real Muggle. Anyways, is Jude there? Is she OK?”
“She’s fine now.”
“News about her is going around big in Hogwarts, about how her powers were evil beyond compare. Filch is having a fit trying to clean up all the glass that broke. Did you know she totaled the entire castle of its windows? God!”
“I know, I’ve got it first-hand,” Aaron said as he showed his bandaged hands to Harry.
“Ouch!” Harry cringed at the sight of Aaron’s hands, “Anyways, everyone’s talking. They’re getting paranoid and such, and Malfoy is being a pain in the neck again by spreading around lies, saying that Jude is some sort of succubus or whatever…”
“She’s Voldemort’s daughter,” Aaron blurted out before even realizing he said it, earning a wide-eyed look from Harry. Aaron frowned, seemingly hating the idea that Draco Malfoy enjoyed making fun of his best friend. Hermione, who also heard his statement, suddenly came into view, pushing Harry aside.
“You serious?”
“I did a blood test on her. It revealed Tom Riddle as the father.”
“Good God of Merlin!” Harry exclaimed as he moved into view beside Hermione. “How is that possible?! I know she’s like me, born a pure witch raised by a Muggle family, but a daughter of Voldemort?!”
“I know…” Aaron said as he carried her in his arms. He summons his Firebolt and said, “I’m going somewhere, so I gotta cut you short, Harry.”
“Oh, OK, we won’t bother you then,” Harry said. He caught sight of Jude in his arms and gasped, “Goodness…poor Jude. She looks bad.”
Aaron sighed and ended the firecall. He supported Jude close to his back with one arm and held onto the broom with the other and flew off, hoping that whatever the secret meeting was would hold the answers to Jude’s secret past.
